Vincent Lamar Wilburn was born on August 16, 1959,
in Newark, New Jersey, to Lillie B. Goode and Rev. Dr. Willie S. Wilburn, Sr.
He departed this life on March 30, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love,
laughter, and service.
At an early age,
Vincent’s family relocated to Lakewood, New Jersey, where he was raised and
educated in the Lakewood School System. He graduated from Lakewood High School
in 1977. That same summer, Vincent answered the call to serve his country by
enlisting in the United States Army. He completed boot camp and served on
active duty in Germany, later continuing in the Army Reserves until receiving
an honorable discharge in 1983.
While serving, Vincent
discovered a passion that would remain with him throughout his life—custodial
work. He took great pride in his work, recognizing the importance of creating
clean and welcoming spaces for others. His career included service with the
Lakewood Board of Education, the Pemberton Township Board of Education, and the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In his later years, he was
employed by East Coast Maintenance, where he especially enjoyed working at the
Greek Church in Toms River, New Jersey—a place that brought him great joy.
In 1982, Vincent
married Gwendolyn Higgs, and from this union, three children were born:
Charles, Jesse, and Sharifah. Vincent was a devoted father and
uncle—always present, always loving—and his care extended far beyond his
immediate family to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Vincent’s lineage and life were firmly rooted in faith, family,
and service. As a founding member of Rivers of Life in Freehold, New Jersey, he
was preparing for the office of Deacon and growing in his calling.
Vincent had a presence that could not be ignored.
He was the laugh everyone needed and the help that everyone counted on. Whether
through a kind word, a helping hand, or his unmistakable sense of humor,
Vincent made people feel seen, valued, and special.
He leaves to cherish a
lifetime of loving memories with his children: Charles Higgs (TX), Jesse Wilburn
(SC), Sharifah Wilburn (SC), Tanessa Palazzolo (TX), and Venice Wilburn (NC).
He is also survived by
his siblings: Alfred (Angie) Wilburn, NJ; Rev. Adell Wilburn, NJ; Ruby Wilburn,
NJ; Apostle Thelma (Clarence) Ellis, PA; Elder Willie (Kim) Wilburn, Jr., PA;
Apostle M. Queeni (Alton) Green, NJ; Rhonda Wilburn, NC; Leslie Cochran, NJ;
Tawnlethia Lennon, PA; Candra Wynn, NJ; and Sakina (Leon) McDonald, NJ.
Vincent’s legacy
continues through his seven cherished grandchildren: C’dasia Higgs, Selina
Higgs, Kavon Petersen, Ava Wilburn, Jedidiah Smith, Yahsir Thomas, and Sanai
Reeves; and his four precious great-grandchildren: Kaylee Higgs, Donovan Hill,
Kamara Byrd, and Yahsir Thomas, Jr.
He is also lovingly
remembered by his stepmother, Dr. Wanda Wilburn; his forever mother-in-law,
Nettie Higgs; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended family,
and dear friends who will miss him dearly.
Vincent was preceded in
death by his parents, Lillie B. Goode and Rev. Dr. Willie S. Wilburn, Sr., and
his stepfather, Edward "Gillie" Johnson.
Vincent’s life was a
gift to all who knew him. His laughter, his kindness, and his willingness to
show up for others will never be forgotten. His legacy lives on in the hearts
of those who loved him and in the many lives he touched.
Vincent strived daily to treat people
well so that one day he would hear his Master’s reply: “Well done, good and faithful
servant! …Come and share your Master’s happiness.” Matthew 25:23 (NIV)
